Located in Barco, NC, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing. Our nationwide centers can conduct hair tests, requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, assessing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair testing over urine tests. These tests benefit employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation by offering an up to 90-day drug use detection window. While highly reliable for long-term detection, urine tests are preferred for recent use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair serves as a record of alcohol and drug use by locking biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair potentially offers up to a 3-month period of detection for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

Approximately 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken close to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal sample quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests above 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferred. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair may be retrieved. When referencing head hair, it denotes scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory treatment of a drug test result incorporates four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s mechanism. It involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid check for drug abuse. Screening serves as an economical means to eliminate drug use in most samples, yet a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in legal settings. Samples that return as presumptively positive in Screening need an additional confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, further hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug testing as the most intricate method to accomplish.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory journey from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to bypass: It is extremely challenging to pass a hair drug test unethically, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over traditional urine testing in Barco, NC. The foremost benefit is its extended detection time, often catching drug use missed by a urine test. Urine tests typically detect recent consumption only, whereas hair tests can uncover a broader history of substance use, offering a comprehensive analysis of drug consumption habits.

Hair testing is also superior in detecting evasion tactics commonly associated with urine tests. In Barco, this matters greatly to employers who require unwavering precision in test results. Hair tests eliminate the risk of tampering that can compromise urine test results, ensuring a true reflection of the individual's substance use history.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Barco, NC, value the extended detection window provided by hair follicle drug testing. Unlike other methods, hair testing can reveal drug use over the past 90 days, offering a detailed view of an individual's substance history. This timeframe helps make well-informed decisions about applicants or current employees' suitability and reliability.

The ability to identify patterns in drug use spanning several months aids employers in painting a comprehensive picture of a potential or current employee. By utilizing the extended detection window, companies can maintain high standards of integrity and safety in the workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Barco, NC, hair follicle testing stands out as a tamper-resistant solution. Unlike urine tests, which are susceptible to adulteration, hair tests provide a robust defense against sample tampering. The inherent nature of hair samples ensures that results captured are genuine, eliminating doubts about the specimen's integrity or the test outcome.

This tamper-resistant characteristic of hair testing is invaluable for employers aiming to uphold high standards of trust and reliability. It guarantees that the results are a true representation of an individual's substance use history, fostering confidence in decision-making processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
