Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bayboro, North Carolina. For those requiring hair or alcohol testing, we offer hair testing expertise with centers in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed. Hair analysis can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized tests.

Hair drug testing has gained popularity in recent years as a preferred method. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals often choose it over urine tests. It's favored for zero-tolerance drug policies, probation monitoring, and legal cases. A major advantage is its detection window of up to 90 days, difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use under five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol usage by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can indicate drug and alcohol use for up to three months. Hair sample collection is straightforward, making it hard to tamper with and easy to send off for testing.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands, equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil, from near the scalp, provides approximately 100mg of hair—this is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG tests, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is recommended. It's best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be used, an equivalent portion of body hair might be gathered. By scalp hair, we mean hair from the head only, while body hair includes all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in laboratory processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is logged into a lab’s system. This process confirms the sample was properly sealed and dispatched. Then, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any supplementary data not included in an electronic chain of custody is entered.

Screening quickly assesses samples for drug presence. While it is a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in many samples, a positive result in Screening must be validated for legal acceptability. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation step.

For positive results at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the specimen and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are distilled from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive screenings undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The full lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is aligned with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use covering up to 90 days, contrasting with urine testing, which offers a shorter window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The challenge of cheating a hair drug test ensures more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: Unlike tests for recent use, it reveals drug use patterns over time.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," these analyses measure the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine drug tests in Bayboro, NC, hair testing emerges as the superior choice. It boasts unrivaled detection accuracy, ensuring reliable insights into long-term drug use.

While urine tests reveal recent drug use, hair tests provide a comprehensive view of an individual's history, covering up to 90 days. This extends the testing window and contributes to more informed decision-making for employers.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Bayboro, NC, choose hair follicle testing for its extended detection window, revealing drug use over the past 90 days. This method offers a longitudinal perspective on an individual's substance history.

Hair tests provide a detailed understanding not captured by shorter-window tests. They provide a comprehensive review, allowing employers to assess potential risks in their workforce.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
