Accredited Drug Testing offers full-service hair follicle drug testing in Bermuda Run, North Carolina. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing with facilities across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct a test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Tests can uncover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method of drug testing. This form of testing is increasingly required by employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse professionals over conventional urine tests. It's favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those under probation. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection timeframe, generally up to 90 days, conducted through an observed collection process, and is nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests are still the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a period of about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG add-ons and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to measure the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't an option, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical phases in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves checking that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for illicit substances. While Screening offers an affordable way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirming for legal admissibility. Any samples indicating potential positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show potential positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing methodology.

Verifying any positive Screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potentially positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation if required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug exams can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which cover a shorter span.
  • High resistance to tampering: It's notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Chronological insight: It offers usage patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs become traceable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug examinations cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Influences like hair hue and individual hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests assess the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
