Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Bessemer City, North Carolina. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in these assessments with testing centers located in every city nationwide. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug testing. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation individuals frequently use these tests. The main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, gathered under observation and difficult to tamper with, although urine tests remain best for detecting recent drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent resource for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair offers a detection range of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is comparatively challenging, and shipping is efficient.

A sample size of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) located nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, deemed an optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of specimen is advisable. It's recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a similar volume of body hair is an alternative. Note that head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the laboratory drug test processing: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This phase ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any further data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody solution.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for abused drugs. Though it is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court validity. Samples that test presumptive positive during Screening necessitate corroboration.

Should a sample test presumptive positive during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair concentrations that are significantly lower than those in alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which underscores the complexity of hair drug screening.

Any positive screening result undergoes validation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug evaluation is notably hard, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Serves as historical data: It can illustrate a drug use trend over a duration, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations often cost more than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration levels.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
