Accredited Drug Testing offers all-inclusive hair follicle drug testing services in Beulaville, North Carolina. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, we are experts in hair testing, with facilities in cities across the country. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head, or sometimes body, is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored testing choices.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. More employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over the conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, court systems, and those on probation utilize hair tests. The main advantage is the extended 90-day detection window in a monitored process that is nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a long-lasting record of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When procured near the scalp, hair can furnish a detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs of up to roughly 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or if testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result is comprised of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system, ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result requires further confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Samples with a preliminary positive result in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

In cases where the Screening stage indicates a presumptively positive result, further hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), accounting for the complexities of hair drug screening.

The Confirmation of any positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before necessary confirmations. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can unveil drug use for as long as 90 days, while urine tests cover a shorter span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test proves very challenging, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Delivers usage patterns: It reveals a timeline of drug usage over a duration, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not viable for recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
