Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bolivia, North Carolina. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair analysis is supported by a network of testing facilities across the nation, equipped to conduct thorough testing. Typically, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown, or alternatively, other body hair can be used. These tests are suitable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored evaluations.

The trend towards utilizing hair follicle drug tests has increased notably, with many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists favoring it over traditional urine testing. Preferred by entities with strict no-drug policies, including judicial systems and probationary environments, this method offers a significant advantage due to its extended drug detection window—up to 90 days. Hair samples are collected under direct observation, reducing the possibility of tampering. For screening drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly been recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the elongated hair strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection span for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, enhancements, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair may be collected. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory's system. This encompasses verifying that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid examination for illicit substance use. Although Screening offers a cost-effective method to rule out drug intake in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug analysis as one of the more challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair stipulation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timespan.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It can reveal trends of drug use over a length of time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing holds distinct advantages in Bolivia, NC, as it outperforms conventional urine screens in detecting and verifying substance use patterns. Hair tests, with their longer detection periods and inherent accuracy, minimize uncertainties typically associated with urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
