Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Carolina Shores, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing is your local specialist. With centers nationwide, we make hair drug and alcohol testing accessible in every city. To utilize this method, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or elsewhere on the body is required. This test detects drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized further.

The adoption of hair follicle drug testing has surged recently, becoming a preferred choice over traditional urine tests for many employers and legal systems. This method is favored by those enforcing strict no-drug policies, due to its extended 90-day detection window and observation-based collection process, making it virtually tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day span.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair archives a prolonged history of alcohol and drug exposure by locking biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strands. When harvested near the scalp, hair may offer a detection period of up to three months for both alcohol and drug presence. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A sample spanning 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screenings and confirmations. For EtG testing, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh this. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair exclusively pertain to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other varieties (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four critical stages in processing a laboratory drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the primary processing phase where a sample is integrated into a lab's system. This step verifies correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening, a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse, offers a budget-friendly means to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, though confirmations of positive screens are needed for legal admissibility. Samples testing tentatively positive at Screening necessitate follow-up confirmation.

Samples testing tentatively positive in Screening proceed to Extraction, where further hair from the initial sample is utilized. This phase involves capturing drugs from hair at concentrations far lower than those in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening confirmations are conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation both oversee the lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for as much as 90 days, whereas urine tests pose a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, which boosts result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It supplies a timeline of drug use over a duration, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally bear higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
