Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Center Hill, North Carolina. If you're in need of drug or alcohol analysis through hair, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field with facilities nationwide equipped for such exams. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body can be analyzed to test for drugs, alcohol/ETG or other specialized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of the drug screening repertoire. Many organizations, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair tests over conventional urine analysis. Employers with strict drug-use rules, court systems, and probationary individuals often rely on these tests. The primary advantage lies in the extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, collected in a strictly observed process that is nearly foolproof against manipulation. However, when identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluation is now recognized as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands preserve a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can potentially provide around a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily altered, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hairs (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it pertains to the scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab processing a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. It involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening consists of an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a low-cost method to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive Screening must be validated to be allowable in legal settings. Any samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening require a secondary confirmation step.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower levels than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence why hair-based drug screening is the most sophisticated technique.

Verification of any positive results from screening is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed prior to verification as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug examinations:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Complicated to fake: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus yielding more precise results.
  • Presents historical insight: It offers a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent drug intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot ascertain recent consumption: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often described as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
