Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Cleveland, North Carolina. If you're in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert in hair testing, with centers in all cities across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Generally, hair with a length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is sufficient. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug tests are increasingly the method of choice for drug testing. More employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse professionals are requiring hair drug testing over the traditional urine test. This method is preferred by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers. The main advantage is the extended detection window, up to 90 days, with supervised collection, making tampering almost impossible. However, urine tests remain the go-to for detection within a recent 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a comprehensive historical record of substances by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. If gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeline of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other narcotics. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (equivalent in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the specimen is provided. It is advisable to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar amount of body hair might be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial process of entering a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves ensuring that the sample is sealed and properly shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening serves as an initial swift evaluation for substance misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug consumption in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified for courtroom admissibility. Samples indicating a presumptively positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a briefer detection window.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, thereby enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It offers a pattern of substance usage across a timeframe, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be affected by factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Cleveland, NC, hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests. Superior detection accuracy and reliability make it an ideal choice for zero-tolerance policies. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
