Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head is necessary, though other body hair can often be used. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom testing options tailored to your needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a favored method, replacing traditional urine tests. It's used by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals due to its effectiveness. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation often demand a hair drug test. The main advantage is a longer detection window for drug usage, lasting up to 90 days, collected during a supervised process, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain pertinent for drug use within the past 5 days, maintaining high accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand’s fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for substances like alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is missing, a comparable quantity of body hair may be acquired. When discussing head hair, this pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation are the four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result.

Accessioning involves the sample’s preliminary processing into a laboratory system. This entails confirming the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening denotes an initial, swift examination for drugs of misuse. While Screening provides a cost-effective means of dismissing drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court acceptability. Samples presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening among the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter time frame.
  • Difficulty in deception: Hair drug test results are highly accurate due to the difficulty in altering them.
  • Provides usage patterns: It reveals drug use trends over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drug presence in hair takes about 5-7 days to become detectable.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing options.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
