Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Coleridge, North Carolina. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol exam, we're specialists in hair testing, with facilities available in all cities Nationwide. A sample generally requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been preferred for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for hair tests over urine tests. Hair testing serves organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation. This method's advantage is the extended detection period, generally up to 90 days, with observed collection and reduced chance of tampering. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. The fibers of the hair strand preserve biomarkers, providing a comprehensive historical record of substance intake. Collecting hair near the scalp can reveal drug or alcohol use for around three months. The collection process is straightforward, with the sample being resistant to tampering and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hairs (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp equates to 100mg, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be taken. 'Head hair' pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas 'Body hair' includes other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The key stages in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses integrating the sample into the lab's system. This step involves confirming the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any necessary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial examination for controlled substances. As a cost-efficient means of eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation for legal admissibility. Positive indicators in Screening necessitate confirmatory follow-up.

If screened positively, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in methods like urine or oral fluid, positioning hair drug testing among the most challenging techniques.

Confirmatory testing of any positive screen occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples positive on initial screening are cleansed before confirmation as required. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection times.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to deceive, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers past data: This test can illustrate a timeline of drug use over months, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Limited recent detection: Drugs need 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolites concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the actual assessment is of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
