Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Dana, North Carolina. For those seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our company excels in hair testing with facilities available nationwide. To perform a hair test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is typically needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other specific testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle testing has become a more favored method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often choose it over traditional urine tests. These tests are especially useful for organizations with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. Hair tests offer longer drug detection—up to 90 days—and are difficult to tamper with. For recent drug use, however, urine tests remain the best option within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a prolonged record of drug and alcohol intake, capturing markers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When extracted near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal drug and alcohol use over a period of up to three months. It's easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG or additional tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is recommended. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is advisable. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent body hair sample may be taken. When we mention head hair, it strictly refers to scalp hair; body hair includes all other varieties (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four essential phases in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial entry into the lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample is securely sealed and dispatched, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any pending data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening offers a preliminary evaluation for drugs of misuse. Though it's an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most cases, a positive finding in Screening requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that test positive during Screening need further verification.

When a screening indicates a presumptive positive result, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations than what other methods like urine or oral fluid manage, making hair drug assessments one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Positive screening results undergo verification using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation conforms to the CAP's Hair designation and the standards set by ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing the short window of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: It's notably challenging to manipulate hair drug test results, hence ensuring their reliability.
  • Evidence of consumption patterns: It reveals a timeline of drug use, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair samples.
  • Expenses: Generally, hair drug assessments cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent outcomes: Variables like hair hue and personal hair growth rates can influence metabolite level in hair strands.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
