Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Davis, North Carolina. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and has centers across the nation's cities to conduct these assessments. Generally, hair from the head measuring 1.5 to 2 inches or body hair may be analyzed. Hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific hair testing requirements.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug testing. More employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are chosen by employers with strict drug policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. The key advantage is the extended drug detection period of up to 90 days with an observed collection, making it nearly foolproof against tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine testing remains the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimum sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, a corresponding amount of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, giving a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is completed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to cheat: It is notably difficult to deceive a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more pricey than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Davis, NC, surpasses urine testing due to its greater detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair analyses can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, offering a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history. This extended detection period ensures that employers and authorities gain a clearer picture of patterns, enhancing decision-making.

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle analyses provide a more reliable account of substance use. The resistance of hair testing to tampering and environmental factors makes it a secure method for drug detection. This reliability provides employers with the confidence needed to maintain drug-free workplace policies effectively.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Davis, NC, offers an extended detection window, capturing substance use over a longer period of up to 90 days. This comprehensive timeline allows employers to gain insights into an individual's drug history, aiding in informed hiring and management decisions. Such an extensive detection period is a key advantage of hair testing.

Employers benefit from hair tests' ability to detect historical drug use, supporting a thorough understanding of an applicant or employee's substance habits. This extended window provides a clearer depiction of behavior, addressing not just immediate but also past usage, which is not possible with shorter-term testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Davis, NC, hair follicle drug testing is a tamper-resistant method that ensures reliable results. The nature of hair collection minimizes the risk of sample adulteration, making it nearly impossible to interfere with test outcomes. This characteristic guarantees the authenticity of results, providing peace of mind to employers and courts.

The robust design of hair testing in Davis, NC, significantly reduces manipulation attempts, offering an unassailable test method. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
