Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Deep Gap, North Carolina. If you require a hair or alcohol drug screen, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have facilities across all cities nationwide that can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can suffice. Hair tests can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other advanced testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method of drug screening. Several employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage is the extended detection period, which can reach up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process, making it almost foolproof. Nonetheless, for recent drug usage within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of substance use by ensnaring biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a tracking period of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hair strands—comparable to a #2 pencil in width—positioned close to the scalp, supplies 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be obtained. Our reference to head hair exclusively denotes scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing within a laboratory's framework. This stage encompasses verification of the sample’s seal and shipping integrity, assignment of a random LAB (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and the completion of any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid assessment for drug presence. While it is an economical approach for excluding substance use in the majority of samples, a positive result in Screening necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that presumptively test positive in Screening demand further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is considered the most intricate method to execute.

Any positive result from Screening is validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed as necessary before final confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection timespan.
  • Low susceptibility to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing the precision of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug use spanning time, not simply recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: Detecting drugs in hair requires roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration could be influenced by factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
