Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive drug testing services through hair follicle analysis in Dixon, North Carolina. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our centers nationwide, including all cities, can assist. For testing, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is ideal, either from the crown or other body areas. Our options include analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair test selections.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been adopted in modern drug screening practices. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are choosing hair drug tests over the conventional urine analysis. This method is favored by workplaces enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation processes. Its key advantage is its extended detection window—up to 90 days—alongside being collection secure and resistant to tampering. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records extended alcohol and drug history by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can indicate substance use up to roughly 3 months prior. Gathering hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable in diameter to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. In absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. When referencing head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes every other type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the sample processing within a laboratory’s framework. This step involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other necessary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for the presence of drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective means to eliminate most cases of drug use, a confirmed result is needed for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the sample for further preparation in the Extraction stage. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drugs for as long as 90 days, surpassing urine tests which offer shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to falsify: Tampering with a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, ensuring enhanced accuracy in results.
  • Offers longitudinal data: This method reveals a pattern of drug use over time, extending beyond just current usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the amount of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", this examination assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
