Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Dobson, North Carolina. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we specialize in this testing method and have facilities across all cities in the nation ready to conduct hair evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed. Such tests can help detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized for various purposes.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing methods have gained popularity. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer it over traditional urine testing. It's favored by employers enforcing stringent drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation due to its extended detection timeline—up to 90 days—via supervised collection, making tampering unlikely. Yet, urine tests remain most accurate for very recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is emerging as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol utilization. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug consumption by incorporating biomarkers into the structure of the hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence for up to a three-month period. It is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp can provide 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. The term 'head hair' is specific to scalp hair only. 'Body hair' encompasses all other hair types (including facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing procedure in the lab comprises four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is introduced into the lab's system. This process includes checking that the sample is correctly sealed and transported, assigning a unique Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizing any outstanding data input not completed by the electronic tracking system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid evaluation of commonly abused drugs. While it is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most specimens, any positive outcome in Screening must be verified to be acceptable in legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive at this stage necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and set up for Extraction. This stage entails retrieving drugs from the hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated based on both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for periods reaching 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing the reliability of the outcomes.
  • Reflects usage patterns: It provides insights into drug use trends over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detection in hair typically requires 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Influences such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Dobson, NC, hair follicle testing offers clear advantages over traditional urine tests, including superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis covers a broader detection window, offering a historical overview of substance use up to 90 days back.

Hair testing provides an enhanced detection ability, catching drug traces missed by urine testing. As a reliable method, it ensures an in-depth view of an individual's substance history, proving valuable for employers with zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Dobson, NC, offer an unrivaled detection window, revealing substance use over an extended period. This method provides employers with a comprehensive understanding of an individual's drug history, often identifying usage up to 90 days prior.

By extending the drug detection timeframe, hair follicle testing gives a more complete picture of potential substance abuse, valuable for companies seeking thorough insights into employee behaviors over a substantial duration.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Dobson, NC, hair follicle tests reduce the potential for sample tampering, ensuring consistent and reliable results. This method is favored for its high resistance to adulteration, safeguarding the integrity of drug screening processes.

The robustness of hair follicle testing lies in its tamper-resistant nature, providing a clear advantage by delivering results that are both reliable and easily verifiable, maintaining trust in testing outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
