Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dunn, North Carolina. If you’re in need of a drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing with centers available nationwide, including all cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body are required for a hair test. Our tests can analyze for drugs, alcohol, or provide customized testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methodologies. They are increasingly used by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. The main advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, with supervised collection, making it very difficult to alter results. However, urine tests remain best for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. If taken from the area nearest to the scalp, hair provides an approximate 3-month window for alcohol and drug detection. Its collection is straightforward, tamper-resistant, and simplifies shipping.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hairs (equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) positioned closest to the scalp yields 100mg, deemed the optimal amount for testing and validation. For EtG, supplementary analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the hair on a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. In discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of a drug test outcome includes the stages of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial sample integration into the lab's database. This covers checking the sample seal and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a preliminary evaluation for drug presence. Although Screening efficiently rules out drug use in most samples, any positive results must be confirmed for court acceptability. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If deemed presumptively positive at the Screening phase, further hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at much reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques confirm any positive Screening findings. Before confirmation, presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection capability: Hair drug tests reveal drug use over a period of up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Cheating resilience: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Chronological data: It gives insight into drug usage patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: Detecting drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Dunn, NC, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests are limited and easier to manipulate, hair tests provide a longer detection window, making them a more thorough and foolproof approach for identifying substance use. This advantage means employers can trust the results more confidently.

Extended Detection Window

With an extended detection window, hair follicle testing in Dunn, NC, reveals drug use over a span of up to 90 days. This long-term analysis offers employers a thorough insight into a person’s history, allowing them a deeper understanding of past substance use, which is critical for making informed decisions during hiring or ongoing employment evaluations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
