In Edneyville, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with access to testing centers nationwide. Typically, hair from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, suffices. Our services extend to tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized hair testing solutions.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has surged in recent years. Employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Utilized by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services, hair follicle tests have an extended detection range, lasting up to 90 days. These tests, conducted under observation, are almost impossible to tamper with, but for recent drug use, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and narcotics through the capture of biomarkers in the strands' fibers as they grow. Obtaining hair near the scalp can reveal up to roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to mail.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, equivalent to around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil), close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests over 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't present, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. In speaking of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in lab processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a brisk evaluation for drugs of abuse. As a cost-effective strategy, Screening helps negate drug usage on most samples, yet a positive screen necessitates confirmation to hold in court. Samples potentially positive in Screening require additional verification.

Should a sample indicate a tentative positive in Screening, further hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drug extractions from hair occur at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes examination under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug assessments can disclose drug use spanning up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Cheating resistance: Hair drug tests are exceedingly tough to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Narrative data: They offer a continuous timeline of drug usage over time, instead of simply recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: There's a lag of roughly 5-7 days before drugs manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically surpass other drug testing methods cost-wise.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair hue and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite level present in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
