Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Elon College, North Carolina. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our centers are strategically positioned nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Clients can opt for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, the preference for hair follicle drug tests over conventional urine tests has surged. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists often favor hair testing due to its stringent drug-free policies. These tests offer up to a 90-day drug detection window, are conducted with direct observation, and are known for being tamper-proof. However, to detect drug use within a recent 5-day window, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an efficient method for identifying substance use, hair analysis offers an extensive history of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal substance consumption within an estimated 3-month timeframe. The hair collection process is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp yields 100mg, the perfect quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is suggested. It's recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair indicates all other hair types (facial, axillary, and the like).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in a lab comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is introduced into the laboratory system. This step involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary fast track for drug detection. While Screening economically rules out drug use for most samples, legal validation requires that a positive result be confirmed. All samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests the most challenging to accurately execute.

Confirmation for any positive finding from Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before Confirmation, any presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required. The entire processing chain from Accessioning through to Confirmation is aligned with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests detect drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests cover a shorter period.
  • Resistance to fraud: Hair tests are hard to falsify, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical perspective: Capable of illustrating drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Elon College, NC, hair follicle testing distinctly surpasses traditional urine tests. Benefits include the ability to uncover drug usage over a prolonged span, up to 90 days, providing a more accurate depiction of habitual use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
