Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Enon, North Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis with centers across the nation ready to administer tests. Typically, hair from the crown must be 1.5 to 2 inches long, though body hair can also be used. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recent years have seen an uptick in utilizing hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, the court system, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair testing over the traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers upholding zero-tolerance drug use policies, courts, and those on probation. A major advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed sampling, and its resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a substantial resource in detecting substance and alcohol ingestion. It offers an extended history of these substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair provides nearly a 3-month timeframe for identifying alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A specimen of 1.5 inches of hair containing roughly 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" denotes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Workflow Summary

The testing of a specimen encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial integration of a sample into a lab's records. This step confirms the sample's proper sealing and transport, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entry absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for illicit substances. Although cost-effective, this step primarily rules out most drug use cases; however, any positive outcome necessitates verification for legal acceptance. Samples deemed presumptively positive from Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or saliva), making hair analysis the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive initial result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation following ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis identifies substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Altering results of hair analysis is notably hard, ensuring more precise data.
  • Reflects usage history: It provides a timeline of substance use, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot indicate recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair analysis tends to be pricier than other testing forms.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth might influence the metabolite concentration.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Enon, NC, hair follicle testing emerges as superior when compared to traditional urine tests. Hair tests offer a much longer detection window, capturing a broader scope of substance use histories. This extends up to 90 days, providing a clearer snapshot for employers regarding applicants' or employees' past substance use, which urine tests typically cannot match.

Another benefit of hair testing over urine is its increased reliability. Hair samples are less susceptible to tampering, ensuring that the results reflect true substance use. Employers seeking dependable methods for enforcing drug-free policies often prefer hair follicle testing due to these compelling attributes.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle drug tests offer an incredible detection window, capturing drug use over a period extending up to 90 days. In Enon, NC, this extended timeframe provides employers with a detailed insight into an individual's substance history. With such a longitudinal view, hiring decisions are informed, reducing risks associated with undiscovered past substance use.

Employers value the extended detection period that hair testing offers because it aligns with comprehensive workplace policies. By encompassing a long span of potential drug use, businesses can understand better and manage employee health and safety. This ensures a more robust and diligent approach to maintaining a drug-free environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the most significant advantages of hair follicle testing in Enon, NC, is its resistance to tampering. Unlike urine tests, hair samples provide a higher level of integrity, minimizing the risk of adulteration. This tamper-resistance ensures the results are reliable, giving employers confidence in the data they receive.

Ensuring uncompromised results is crucial in today’s compliance-focused environments. Hair follicle analysis stands out by offering secure, tamper-resistant testing, thereby reducing fraudulent undertakings. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
