Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Evergreen, NC. Whether you need a hair-based drug or alcohol check, our expertise in hair sampling stands out, with facilities across the nation ready to serve. Typically, we utilize 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair samples can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or facilitate unique testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug assessments have become a preferred method for drug screening. Increasingly, employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are favoring hair over urine testing. This method attracts entities with zero-tolerance policies and those overseeing probation. Its key advantage is detecting drug use over extended periods, often up to 90 days, while being virtually tamper-proof. Despite this, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug usage.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol presence over an approximate 3-month duration. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in width to a #2 pencil) cut near the scalp will result in 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, 150mg of hair is suggested. It’s advisable to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be acquired, an equal volume of body hair may be obtained. "Head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other categories of hair (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the lab analysis of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s database. This step involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, attaching a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any necessary additional data not captured by an electronic chain of custody procedure.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for illicit drugs. While Screening is an efficient approach for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be verified for legal admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial collection for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are separated from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), justifying why hair drug analysis is the most challenging procedure to execute.

Positive results from the initial screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples get washed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab procedures ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation are subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug analyses can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days, whereas urine analyses have a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing the precision of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can show a timeline of drug consumption over weeks or months, rather than only indicating recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally cost more than other testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Individual differences in hair color and growth can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair analyses.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Evergreen, NC, stands superior to urine testing due to its profound accuracy and comprehensive detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, hair tests provide a broader window, unveiling drug use patterns over several months rather than days.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
