Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Fairmont, NC. If you're in need of a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing with facilities in every city across the nation ready to conduct your test. Ensure you have hair 1.5 to 2 inches long, usable from both scalp or body. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other tests.

Recently, drug testing procedures increasingly incorporate the hair follicle test method. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor the hair test over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance policies for drugs, used by employers, judiciary, and probation officers. A major advantage is the longer drug detection window, typically up to 90 days, with samples collected under supervision to ensure test reliability, although urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis stands out as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. It offers a protracted timeline of usage by trapping specific biomarkers in the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. Hair, when taken near the scalp, can provide a detection period extending up to about three months for substances. Its collection is straightforward, rather challenging to falsify, and convenient for dispatch.

A sample length of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil), collected nearest to the scalp, amounts to approximately 100mg, ideal for both screening and verification. For tests involving EtG additions and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the hair sample. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, a similar portion of body hair may be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step, which involves entering a sample into a lab's systems. It consists of confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry that an electronic chain of custody might not offer.

Screening serves as an initial broad test for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive outcomes necessitate confirmation for legal admissibility. Any Screening presumptively positive samples must undergo secondary verification.

In cases where a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. This stage involves drug extraction at much lower concentrations from hair compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening one of the more complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any Screening positive results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample is cleaned before confirmation if needed. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, follows reviews under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing identifies drug use for a maximum duration of 90 days, which is considerably longer than urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are notably hard to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data provision: They offer a comprehensive view of drug usage patterns over an extended period, unlike short-term detection methods.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: Drugs become identifiable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use, thus recent usage may not be detected immediately.
  • Higher expenses: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth influence the metabolites' concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strands rather than the follicles beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests in Fairmont, NC reveals remarkable advantages. Superior detection accuracy is achieved with hair tests, scrutinizing drug use over an extended window. This testing method is preferred for its reliability, proving more challenging to manipulate than urine exams, ensuring dependable results.

Extended Detection Window

In Fairmont, NC, hair follicle tests offer an extended detection window, capturing drug activity up to 90 days prior. This lengthy timeframe enables a broad perspective on an individual's substance use history, serving as an insightful tool for employers reviewing an applicant or employee's past behavior regarding drug usage.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
