In Fearrington Village, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether for hair drug or alcohol tests, our specialization in hair analysis is supported by testing centers across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing is increasingly utilized in recent years. It's preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Hair tests, vital for zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation, provide a detection window up to 90 days, making them nearly impossible to falsify. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The structure of hair allows it to record a comprehensive history of substance intake by capturing biomarkers in the strands as they develop. When sourced near the scalp, hair samples can reveal usage patterns for up to a quarter of a year concerning alcohol and other substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is considered optimal for screen and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, we suggest collecting 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advisable. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used as a substitute. It is important to clarify that by head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a laboratory is comprised of four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is recorded in a laboratory's system. This step checks that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completes any remaining data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical measure to eliminate drug usage in the majority of samples, any positive screen needs additional confirmation for legal use. Samples indicating potential positivity in Screening undergo further confirmation.

Upon a positive indication in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. Here, substances are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), validating hair testing as a particularly challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive preliminary result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumed positivity are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation falls under the scrutiny of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: It illustrates a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Fearrington Village, NC, hair follicle testing emerges as superior when compared to traditional urine tests. One significant benefit lies in its extended detection timeframe, capturing substance use up to 90 days prior. This offers a broader perspective for employers and authorities on an individual's drug history, far surpassing the limited detection period of urine tests.

Moreover, hair testing provides remarkable accuracy and consistency. While urine tests can sometimes yield inaccurate results due to adulteration, hair tests lessen the potential for tampering. This ensures that the results are trustworthy, a crucial factor for entities enforcing stringent drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Fearrington Village, NC, offers an extensive detection window, making it an ideal choice for employers seeking accurate insights into a person's drug history. With the ability to trace drug usage up to 90 days, it enables a comprehensive view of past substance use, a capability unmatched by other testing forms such as urine tests.

For businesses and decision-makers, this elongated detection period provides actionable data and supports informed choices in hiring and policy enforcement. It not only verifies recent use but also establishes a pattern, helping institutions maintain a drug-free environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Fearrington Village, NC, the hair follicle testing method proves to be highly tamper-resistant. This aspect dramatically reduces the likelihood of sample adulteration compared to urine tests. By using hair samples that are less susceptible to contamination, the integrity of the results is safeguarded, providing confidence in their accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
