Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug tests in Forest Hills, North Carolina. For those requiring tests for drugs or alcohol, our specialty lies in hair analysis, with numerous testing facilities nationwide prepared to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be utilized. The tests evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair analysis options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle analysis. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair testing over traditional urine tests. With zero-tolerance drug use policies, employers, courts, and probation officers prefer hair tests for their extended detection timeline, up to 90 days, collected under observation, which makes manipulation nearly impossible. For recent drug use detection, within the last five days, urine testing remains highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol ingestion. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a prolonged record of substance use as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair sampling is uncomplicated, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the introduction of a sample into the laboratory system. Steps include checking proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any further data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid check for substances. Although it is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be substantiated for legal purposes. Thus, any samples that test positive initially require further confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing a more challenging methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed for confirming any positive screening results. Samples testing positive will be cleansed before confirmation as required. Completion of the laboratory procedures from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to evade: The difficulty in compromising a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It sheds light on drug usage trends over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for substances to manifest in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
