Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Foxfire, NC. Need a hair drug or alcohol test? We specialize in hair testing and maintain testing centers nationwide in all cities, ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

In the past few years, drug testing increasingly uses hair follicle tests. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are used by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation cases due to their longer drug use detection window, nearly up to 90 days, collected securely and hard to falsify. For drugs used within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most preferred method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage up to an approximate three-month period. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in the laboratory consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial entry into a lab’s system, encompassing the verification of proper sealing and shipping, assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial prompt evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug consumption for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that appear positive during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample appears positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests have the capability to detect drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: There is a period of about 5-7 days before drugs are noticeable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests in Foxfire, NC? Hair testing offers unparalleled detection accuracy and reliability, making it superior to urine tests. Employers, courts, and individuals benefit from longer detection windows.

Unlike urine tests, which may miss recent drug use, hair follicle testing identifies substance use dating back 90 days. The reliability of hair tests assures zero-tolerance policies are effectively enforced.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Foxfire, NC, provides a significant advantage by detecting drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days. This longer window offers a comprehensive view into an individual's past substance abuse.

Unlike other methods, which only capture short-term use, hair testing provides a historical insight. Employers gain valuable information on substance history, aiding in better employee screening and hiring practices.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Foxfire, NC, significantly minimizes the risk of sample adulteration and ensures reliable results. With hair testing, sample tampering is nearly impossible due to its collection and analysis method.

The integrity of results collected through hair drug tests stands strong. These tests are not just about detecting substances but ensuring the credibility of the findings, essential for trust and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
