In Garner, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing is available through our centers across all cities Nationwide. For a hair test, typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. This test can analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers other tailored hair testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent years as a method of drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are often turning to hair drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, the judicial system, and those monitoring individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window for drug use, reaching up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly foolproof. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Hair sampling is easy to execute, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional exams, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. 'Head hair' pertains specifically to scalp hair. 'Body hair' encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The comprehensive procedure of processing a drug test result in a lab encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase, where a sample is integrated into a lab’s records. This involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening includes a preliminary rapid assessment for drug misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive screening must be validated for legal admissibility. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If Screening identifies a sample as potentially positive, more hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower levels than in other approaches (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing notably challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All tentative positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The full lab operation, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Yields historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of substance use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth patterns might influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", these analyses examine the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Garner, NC, hair follicle testing significantly outperforms urine testing in detecting drug use. Hair tests can trace substances consumed up to 90 days prior, opposed to the shorter detection window of urine tests. This extended period provides a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance history, offering better awareness for employers and professionals assessing drug habits.

Apart from a longer detection timeline, hair follicle tests are less susceptible to deception. Unlike urine tests that can be easily manipulated, hair samples that are skillfully collected under observation reduce tampering risk. This makes hair testing a more reliable method when assessing drug use in Garner's workplace environments.

Extended Detection Window

Garner, NC, benefits from the extended detection capabilities of hair follicle testing, which monitors drug use over a significant period, up to 90 days. This comprehensive timeline allows authorities and employers to gain an insightful overview of a person's substance habits, contributing to better-informed decisions regarding employment or legal standing.

Unlike short-window urine tests, hair follicle tests offer a complete review of an individual's drug history. This contributes to Garner employers discerning consistent patterns of drug use, aiding in the process of promoting a safer and more productive workplace. Such extensive tracking leads to more robust drug evaluation methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Garner, NC, is an effective tamper-resistant testing method, significantly curtailing the chances of sample adulteration. In contrast to urine tests, where samples can be manipulated, hair tests offer results that are both reliable and difficult to dispute.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
