In Gibsonville, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol tests extends nationwide, with centers across all cities ready to assist. For most cases, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair samples can be evaluated for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Over the past few years, hair follicle testing has become a prevalent method for drug screening. This approach is increasingly adopted by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts as a replacement for urine tests. Institutions with zero-tolerance policies, probation requirements, and legal entities prefer hair testing due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, rigorous collection procedures, and resilience against tampering attempts. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has evolved into an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. If harvested near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Its collection is straightforward, it's relatively tough to tamper with, and it's convenient to send.

Collecting a 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for testing and verifying. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale is advisable. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. When we reference head hair, we signify scalp hair exclusively. Body hair represents all alternative hair variants (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory handles a drug test result through four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary management of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This phase ensures the sample has been correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing data entry not supplied by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening offers a swift preliminary inspection for illicit drugs. Although Screening effectively and affordably eliminates suspected drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates subsequent verification for court validity. Confirmatory testing is essential for any samples tentatively testing positive during Screening.

Upon a Screening stage presumptive positive, additional hair from the original sample is readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at markedly low concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the trickiest to execute.

The Confirmation of positive screening results employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples showing presumptive positive results are washed before Confirmation if necessary. Every step, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is meticulously reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, along with ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited detection period.
  • Minimal chance for deception: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, thus producing more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict drug use patterns over time rather than just indicating recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to indicate recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are necessary for drugs to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Outcome variations: Drug metabolite concentrations may vary due to factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Although commonly referenced as "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine testing in Gibsonville, NC? Hair tests offer superior detection, revealing drug use over a more extended period. Compared to traditional urine screens, hair tests deliver more reliable outcomes, minimizing doubts about the results. Their unmatched precision sets a standard for accurate drug monitoring, granting peace of mind to testers.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing stands out with its ability to detect substance usage over an extended timeframe of up to 90 days. Particularly in Gibsonville, NC, employers gain a comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance habits. This prolonged window unveils patterns otherwise hidden by shorter detection methods like typical urine tests, aiding in informed decision-making within the workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In the realm of drug testing, hair follicle tests shine as a tamper-resistant option in Gibsonville, NC. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
