Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair drug testing solutions in Gorman, North Carolina. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our specialty in hair testing ensures you have access to testing centers nationwide, capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair analysis can detect substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as offer tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence as a method for detecting drug use. It is increasingly mandated by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts, replacing the urine test. Employers with rigorous drug-free policies, court mandates, and probation requirements are now utilizing hair tests. The key advantage of these tests lies in their extended detection period of up to 90 days, difficult to manipulate, and are observed during collection. However, urine tests remain most reliable for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for discovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer a prolonged timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair samples can indicate substance use within a roughly 3-month timeframe. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to send.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirming results. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale to measure the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not present, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test comprises four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is incorporated into a laboratory's system, verifying proper sealing and shipment, assigning an LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is economical for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples that show potential positives in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

For samples indicated as positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can reflect drug use for up to 90 days, far longer than urine tests.
  • Challenging to evade: Attempting to cheat a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair strands.
  • Cost: Compared to other methods, hair drug tests tend to be more expensive.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While they are often dubbed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Gorman, NC, hair follicle tests outshine traditional urine tests due to their increased detection reliability and accuracy.
Benefits include:

  • A significantly longer detection window
  • Minimal risk of sample tampering

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
