In Grandy, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug analysis. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you require, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area with testing venues across numerous cities Nationwide capable of conducting hair examinations. For the majority of scenarios, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts can be utilized. Hair tests can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more tailored hair testing selections.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a more frequent component in drug testing methods. Numerous employers, courts, and experts in Substance Abuse are opting for hair drug tests over the usual urine tests. Zero-tolerance drug use policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation often rely on hair follicle drug tests. Their key advantage is a significantly longer drug detection timeline, usually up to 90 days, with observation during collection, making deceit almost impractical. Nonetheless, for checking drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within its developing strands. When harvested near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal a detection window of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, moderately challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding ten, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest employing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This procedure encompasses confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Tough to falsify: It is significantly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It supplies a record of drug usage over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days following usage.
  • Price: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
