Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Half Moon, North Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is necessary, our centers, located across all nationwide cities, can conduct these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed in most scenarios. Hair can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing preferences.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a popular alternative for drug screening. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse counselors require hair tests over the conventional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, the courts, and probation supervisors heavily rely on these tests for their prolonged detection period of up to 90 days. Though for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, hair exhibits a prolonged account of alcohol and other drug usage. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair only. "Body hair" pertains to all other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the sample's initial processing within a laboratory setup. This stage includes validating the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data tasks not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Screening serves as an economical approach to dismiss drug use in most samples; however, for legal admissibility, a positive screen must undergo confirmation. Samples projecting a positive result in Screening necessitate a subsequent validation.

In cases where a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underlining why hair drug screening poses more complexity in execution.

Confirmation for any affirmative screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. A comprehensive review of the entire laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation aligns with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 credentials.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Sustained detection period: Hair drug tests identify substance use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Cheating difficulty: The challenge of deceiving a hair drug test enhances the accuracy of results.
  • Historical data provision: It can delineate a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate use detection: Detectability in hair requires an estimated 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other methodologies.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis specifically examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Half Moon, NC

When it comes to drug detection, hair follicle tests clearly outperform traditional urine tests. Unlike urine tests which offer a relatively short detection period, hair tests cover up to 90 days of substance use history. This broader window provides a comprehensive insight into an individual's drug usage patterns, adding value where precision and reliability are a priority.

Moreover, hair tests are nearly tamper-proof, adding another layer of security over urine tests, making them a preferred choice for many.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Half Moon, NC

One of the defining benefits of hair follicle testing is its extensive detection timeframe. Capable of identifying drug use dating back up to 90 days, it offers a detailed view of an individual's substance history. This extended window is invaluable for employers and organizations in crafting informed, strategic human resource decisions based on comprehensive data.

Unlike shorter window alternatives, hair tests grant a fuller picture of drug use, crucial for positions where safety is paramount.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
