Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right here in Trenton, NC. Whether you're in need of a drug or alcohol analysis, our specialization in hair testing ensures top-notch services across our numerous centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is sufficient for a test, and these tests are versatile for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

The approach to drug testing has seen a rise in the popularity of hair follicle tests recently. From employers to courts and those involved in substance abuse monitoring, a switch from conventional urine tests to hair drug tests is happening. Employers, especially those with zero-tolerance stances, as well as judiciary systems and probation services, prefer hair tests because they detect drugs over a longer period, up to 90 days, under supervision, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain more precise for usage in the preceding five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the strands of evolving hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly three-month period of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch cut of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory drug test analysis consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the sample's initial processing within the lab’s system, encompassing validation of the sample’s sealed and correct shipment, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any further data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening is a preliminary and rapid examination for substances. Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug presence in most cases, but positive screens require confirmation for legal validity. Any samples potentially positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

When a sample shows potential positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screen results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with potential positivity are cleansed before confirmation as required. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 certifications.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can indicate drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, so the findings are more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides a record of drug use over a period, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite common references as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Trenton, NC, offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Improved accuracy and reliability are among the reasons why more are turning to hair tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
