Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug testing services in Haywood, North Carolina. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screen, our centers, available across all U.S. cities, are well-equipped for hair testing. Generally, samples of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are necessary. Hair analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for substance screening. This trend is due to their adoption by employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts, who favor it over urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation rely on these tests. Hair tests offer a prolonged detection period of up to 90 days, are collected under supervised conditions, and are nearly infallible against tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain unmatched in accurately identifying recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly viewed as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the hair shaft’s fibers. When taken from a spot close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A section measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimum amount for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a lab involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial intake of a sample into the lab's system. It involves checking that the sample was securely sealed and properly sent, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and doing any extra data input not supplied by an online chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift check for illicit drugs. Despite Screening being a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that show presumptive positive results in Screening need a secondary verification.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is selected from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other processes (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis a challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation as necessary. The end-to-end laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug analysis can detect substance use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to evade: It is notably challenging to compromise hair drug tests, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of substance usage over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is done on the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
