In Hazelwood, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we offer testing centers nationwide in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can reveal the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other testing options tailored to specific needs.

Recently, there's been a shift towards using hair follicle drug tests more often in drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair testing over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests help enforce zero-tolerance policies, catering to employers, the legal system, and probation scenarios. The main advantage is their longer detection period, typically extending up to 90 days, with an observed collection process making it hard to tamper with. Yet, urine tests remain most accurate for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can offer an extended historical record of alcohol and various substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair may provide a detection range of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core phases of laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug abuse detection. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that are presumptive positives during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

In cases where a sample is a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

The Confirmation of a positive screen is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High level of accuracy: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Records historical use: Hair testing can reveal patterns of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing entails higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations within hair samples.

Note: The term "hair follicle test" is often used, but the testing actually analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle located under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
