Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Hillsdale, North Carolina. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with centers across all cities nationwide prepared to conduct a hair test. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing services.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly involved a hair follicle drug test. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now insist on a hair drug test rather than a typical urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation utilize hair follicle drug tests. A key advantage of a hair follicle drug test is a significantly longer detection window, usually up to 90 days, collected via an observed collection method, making it almost unfeasible to cheat. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective measure for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands, providing a chronicled account of substance use over time. Collected from nearby the scalp, it can give an overview of up to a three-month period for detecting drugs and alcohol. Collection of hair is uncomplicated, slightly tough to tamper, and straightforward to transport.

A suggested 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands, similar in diameter to a #2 pencil, located near the scalp yields approximately 100mg of hair, optimal for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or screening comprising more than 10 panels, a larger sample of 150mg is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not available, an equal measure of body hair is an alternative option. When we mention head hair, we imply only scalp hair. 'Body hair' encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Synopsis

The process in a laboratory for analyzing drug test samples includes four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is allocated, and any additional data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system is completed.

The Screening step involves a preliminary examination for drug traces. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient method for excluding drug presence in most samples, any positive findings require confirmation for legal acceptability. A secondary confirmation is imperative for samples tested positive in Screening.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, an extra portion of hair is obtained from the initial sample for the Extraction step. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at generally lower concentrations, unlike other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the more challenging methodologies to perform.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Any presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before Confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Merits of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection span: Capable of detecting drug consumption over a 90-day period compared to shorter spans in urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hard to falsify results, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Trails historical usage: Offers an insight into drug usage patterns, not merely recent activity.

Constraints:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: A delay of about 5-7 days exists for drug detection in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing costs more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth may influence drug metabolite presence in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the actual examination is of the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
