In Hobgood, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you require hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialty in hair testing extends across all cities Nationwide, ensuring local accessibility. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other tailored testing requests.

The hair follicle drug test has become increasingly prevalent for substance testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor it over traditional urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance policies and legal settings, hair tests offer a longer drug detection window, up to 90 days, ensuring a more secure collection process. Although for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended-term account of alcohol and other drug use by anchoring biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers roughly a three-month detection period for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If lack of scalp hair arises, an equivalent quantity of body hair is admissible. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair alone. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential stages in the laboratory processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system, encompassing the validation of proper sealing and shipping, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most cases, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples with presumptive positives during Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive at the Screening step, additional hair is retrieved from the starting sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), underpinning the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Verification of any positive preliminary results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to oversight under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenges to deceit: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly mislabeled as "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
