Accredited Drug Testing provides hair follicle drug testing services in Hope Mills, North Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing offers expertise in hair analysis with centers in all cities nationwide. Most tests require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Recently, health professionals increasingly incorporate hair follicle tests for drug detection. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over urine tests. Zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation services favor this method due to its longer drug detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection, and difficulty to tamper with, although urine tests prevail for recent drug use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the developing hair fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 90-day detection timeline for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, moderately challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When talking about head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This incorporates confirming the sample was securely sealed and properly dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplemental data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient technique to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most complex technique to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a briefer detection span.
  • Difficult to deceive: It's quite hard to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical data: It can indicate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Can't detect recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Remark: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hope Mills, NC, hair follicle testing prevails over urine tests due to its superior detection capabilities. It offers a prolonged detection window and is less prone to manipulation, ensuring accurate results. While urine tests are useful for recent usage, hair tests provide comprehensive insights into an individual's substance history, proving its superiority in various testing scenarios.

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers increased reliability and precision. It detects substance use patterns over a longer timeframe, providing valuable information for employers with stringent drug-free policies. This long-term insight offers a robust alternative to urine testing, ensuring enhanced workplace safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
