Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hot Springs, North Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide to conduct such tests. Generally, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for substance screening. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and addiction specialists are favoring hair tests over urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance policies for drug use, including employers and courts, benefit from hair follicle drug tests due to their extended usage detection period of up to 90 days and observed collection process, making them difficult to deceive. However, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug markers by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair strand develops. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeline for alcohol and other drugs of up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample from about 200 strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is lacking, comparable quantities of body hair can be used. The term head hair exclusively implies scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (like facial and axillary).

Process Overview

Four key steps encompass the laboratory processing of a drug testing result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, registers a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data input not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening implies a rapid preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening efficiently eliminates drug use in the majority, a positive Screen must undergo confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples preliminarily positive post-Screening mandate a secondary affirmation.

If preliminary results are positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are derived from hair at lesser concentrations relative to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), positioning hair drug screening as a highly complex methodology.

Confirmation of positive screenings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample is cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair assessments identify drug usage over a span of up to 90 days, compared to the more limited window of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: It's challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thereby increasing result accuracy.
  • Informs on historical usage: It reveals long-term drug consumption patterns, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to denote recent usage: Drugs necessitate roughly 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug derivatives in the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", this method evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle under the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
