Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle testing services in Jerome, North Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in such tests, with facilities available nationwide that can conduct them. A 1.5 to 2-inch patch of hair on your head or other body parts is generally required. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized options.

Recently, there's been a shift towards using hair follicle drug tests more frequently for drug testing. Numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts opt for hair drug testing rather than the conventional urine tests. Employers, courts, and probationers favor hair tests due to their no-tolerance drug policies. A key advantage is the longer detection period, typically up to 90 days, collected through observed processes and nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term indicator of drug and alcohol intake, capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hairs (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal sample for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is suggested. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The crucial stages in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require secondary validation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive at the Screening stage, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), distinguishing hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is incredibly difficult, hence increasing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical data provision: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Jerome, NC, hair follicle testing offers numerous advantages over traditional urine tests. While urine tests have been the norm, hair testing provides superior detection accuracy. Its ability to identify long-term substance usage makes it a reliable choice for various scenarios.

Because urine tests are limited in their scope and detection window, hair tests stand out by providing a more comprehensive overview, deterring any attempts to cheat the testing system effectively.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Jerome, NC allows for a thorough review of substance use history over the past 90 days. This prolonged period ensures a more comprehensive assessment of an individual’s drug-use pattern.

Employers benefit by gaining an understanding of long-term behaviors, rather than just short-term use, providing a better perspective of the individual's habits, which is crucial in decision-making processes.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests conducted in Jerome, NC offer a highly tamper-resistant testing method. Sample adulteration risk is significantly minimized, ensuring that results are consistent and reliable.

The clandestine nature of sample collection and analysis leaves little room for manipulation, thereby upholding the integrity and credibility of the testing process, which is pivotal in maintaining trust in the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
