For those in Julian, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle examinations. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing provides expert hair testing services, with facilities available across all cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Analyzed for substances, hair tests can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug-use policies, along with courts and probationers, utilize hair tests. These tests offer extended detection of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making them difficult to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair strands entrap biomarkers within their growing fibers, offering a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing that exceeds 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair specifically imply scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This involves ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening ensures an initial brief assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Any positive screening outcome is verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. Throughout the process from Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timespan.
  • Resilience to tampering: Manipulating a hair drug test is highly challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Delivers past data: Provides a trend of drug consumption over time, not only immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often labeled "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
