Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Lake Park, North Carolina. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing means we have centers in every city across the Nation equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body can be used. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific hair test options.

Lately, drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle assessments. Hair drug tests are now favored by employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals over the classic urine test. Employers with strict drug policies, the legal system, and those on probation rely on these tests. Hair follicle tests offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days, are conducted under observation, and are nearly cheat-proof. However, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use (within five days).

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an influential method for detecting drug and alcohol use. The fibers of a growing hair strand capture biomarkers, offering a timeline of alcohol and drug consumption. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A strand sample of 1.5 inches in length, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides an exemplary 100mg sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Employ a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent portion of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we solely mean scalp hair; body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system, which involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data that an electronic chain of custody system doesn't provide.

Screening comprises a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-saving measure to exclude drug usage in most samples, yet a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples presumed positive during Screening owe a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial specimen is prepped for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at substantially lower concentrations from hair compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening exceptionally complex.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples receive a wash pre-confirmation if required. The thorough laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can discern drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Test difficulty to compromise: Cheating on a hair drug test is considerably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Gives historical insight: It reveals a drug use trend over a duration of time, moving beyond mere recent use.

Limitations:

  • No detection for recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing variants.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can sway the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
