Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing in Laurel Hill, NC. Whether for drugs or alcohol, we focus on hair analysis with facilities across the nation to facilitate these tests. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body suffices. Our hair assessments can determine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to other testing needs.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become preferred for substance screenings over traditional urine tests. Businesses, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair tests when zero-tolerance policies are in place. The major advantage of using a hair test is its extended window of drug traceability, extending up to 90 days, with results coming from a supervised collection process, greatly reducing tampering risks. However, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug exposure. When obtained near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp amounts to 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in laboratory processing of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of processing a sample into the laboratory system. This step involves checking that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen needs validation to be court-admissible. Samples presumed positive in Screening require a further confirmation step.

Should a sample be presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing is the most intricate approach to perform.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Challenge to falsify results: Falsification of a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Delivers usage history: It offers a depiction of drug use patterns over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs require around 5-7 days to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Laurel Hill, NC, presents numerous benefits over traditional urine tests. One primary advantage is its superior detection window, which allows for drug use monitoring up to 90 days. This aspect gives a thorough overview of a person's historical substance usage, unlike urine tests, which are limited to a shorter detection period.

Moreover, the reliability of results from hair tests is unmatched. Hair testing detects substances deposited from the bloodstream into hair, providing an objective and difficult-to-manipulate method unlike urine tests, which may be more vulnerable to tampering or contamination. This ensures a higher degree of confidence in the accuracy and authenticity of the results provided to employers, courts, and other stakeholders.

Extended Detection Window

The capability of hair follicle tests to track substance use over an extensive period is unmatched, especially in Laurel Hill, NC. The extended detection window, often reaching up to 90 days, offers employers a detailed view into an individual's usage patterns. This ability to review long-term behavior is crucial for assessing potential hires, ongoing employees, or individuals subject to legal scrutiny.

Employers often need insights beyond immediate history, and the hair testing window provides exactly that. By analyzing such an extensive period, employers can make more informed decisions based on a comprehensive look at an individual's substance use. This attribute is particularly vital for roles where safety and reliability are paramount.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Laurel Hill, NC, hair follicle drug testing's inherent tamper-resistant traits make it an excellent choice for reliable determinations. The method greatly lessens risks associated with adulterating samples due to its complex nature. Once collected, hair samples are nearly impossible to alter, ensuring authenticity and integrity throughout the testing process.

Ensuring the sample's purity from start to finish eliminates questions of validity, unlike urine tests, which can be susceptible to influence during collection or transit. Hair tests provide irrefutable evidence, thereby garnering trust from employers, courts, or probation services, counting on genuine results for compliance and decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
