Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Laxon, North Carolina. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. This type of test can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, the inclusion of hair follicle drug screens has increased significantly. Various employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over the conventional urine screenings. These tests are favored by employers with stringent no-drug policies, legal entities, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, featuring an observed collection that's tough to manipulate. However, when needing to identify recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have become recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol use. Hair offers a comprehensive retrospective of alcohol and drug involvement by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide an observable span of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drug presence. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

A sample size of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (equivalent in width to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will render 100mg of hair, the optimal sample amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to assess the sample's weight using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. In reference to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a specimen within a lab's system. This involves confirming that the specimen was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift check for substances of abuse. Though Screening is an economical means to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive result in the screening needs verification for it to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that show presumptive positives in Screening demand secondary confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentration levels than other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of conducting hair drug screenings.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All previously presumed positive samples undergo washing prior to verification as required. The totality of the lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and accreditation compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably hard, ensuring more precise results.
  • Supplies historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing procedures.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite frequently being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Benefits of Hair Testing Over Urine Testing in Laxon, NC
Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests offer insight into recent drug use, hair testing provides a broader timeline, capturing drug use over several months, offering employers a detailed view of an individual’s habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
