Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Linville, North Carolina. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing with facilities Nationwide, ready to perform the test. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body suffices for most tests. Hair tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method in drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often choose hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests cater to zero-tolerance drug policies, probation conditions, and court requirements. A key advantage of hair follicle testing is the extended detection period for drug use, which can reach up to 90 days. It is collected under observation, making the test nearly uncheatable, whereas urine tests remain the most accurate for drug use detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can track a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by capturing markers in the hair fibers as they grow. Hair samples taken close to the scalp can potentially offer a detection period of about three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal sample for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s workflow. This process involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, generating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any outstanding data input not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial expedient assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is an affordable method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that test positive during Screening necessitate an additional verification procedure.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive result during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves separating drugs from hair at a considerably lower concentration than alternative techniques (such as urine or oral fluid tests), which is why hair drug analysis is the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any suspected positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug evaluations can reveal drug use history for a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Cheating difficulty: It's notably challenging to evade a hair drug test, which enhances result precision.
  • Historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use as opposed to just recent usage data.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It usually takes around 5-7 days before drugs become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically costlier compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the scalp’s hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Linville, NC, the benefits become clear. Hair testing surpasses urine tests with its superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests are limited to detecting recent drug use, hair tests provide a more extended window of substance history, indicating long-term patterns.

Hair tests are highly reliable, reducing the risk of sample tampering prevalent in urine testing. Their comprehensive nature allows employers to gain a detailed perspective on an individual's substance use history, promoting a safer and more transparent environment.

Extended Detection Window

One of the key advantages of hair follicle testing in Linville, NC, is its extended detection window, capable of revealing drug use up to 90 days prior. This extensive timeframe offers employers a comprehensive view of an applicant or employee's substance history, critical for informed decision-making.

By capturing long-term drug use patterns, hair follicle tests equip employers with valuable insights, aiding in the assessment of potential risks and ensuring a safer workplace. The extended detection period sets hair testing apart from traditional methods, offering a broader spectrum of analysis.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Linville, NC, is a tamper-resistant method, significantly minimizing sample adulteration risks. The robust testing process ensures reliable, unquestionable results, which is a stark contrast to easily manipulated urine tests.

The integrity of hair samples means results are more dependable, preventing attempts to evade detection. This reliability is crucial for maintaining trust and accuracy, ensuring that organizations can confidently rely on testing outcomes for decision-making and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
