Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Longwood, North Carolina. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we operate facilities nationwide, including all urban areas, for hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may be used. Our hair assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, the practice of drug testing has increasingly integrated hair follicle exams. Employers, legal systems, and substance professionals often request hair tests instead of urine screenings. These tests appeal to those enforcing zero-tolerance policies and individuals on probation due to a notable advantage: the extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making evasion nearly impossible. Conversely, urine tests remain optimal for substances used within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair sampling has emerged as an impactful method to detect substance use. By capturing biomarkers within the strand's fibers, hair offers an extended historical record of drug and alcohol consumption. When taken near the scalp, hair provides a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch snippet of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. Measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. Head hair indicates only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage, processing a sample into the lab's system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry if an electronic chain of custody system wasn't used.

Screening conducts an initial brief check for drug abuse. Though cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that return a presumptive positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the primary sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drug concentrations are extracted from hair at levels much lower than other techniques like urine or oral fluid, underscoring why hair drug testing is particularly demanding.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can spot drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Hard to tamper with: A hair drug test is notably difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks drug use history: It reveals a chronological pattern of drug consumption, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and individual growth rates can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis assesses the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
