In Macclesfield, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether you're in need of hair-based drug or alcohol testing, here at Accredited Drug Testing, we focus on hair testing and have nationwide centers available for performing them. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is sufficient, either from the crown or body. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored options.

Over the years, drug testing trends have shifted towards hair follicle tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair over urine tests for drug detection. This method is handy for employers upholding strict anti-drug policies, as well as courts and probationary individuals. The outstanding advantage is the longer detection period, usually up to 90 days. This method is highly reliable as it's conducted under supervision, leaving minimal room for deception. For identifying recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now perceived as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Employing hair offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected from near the scalp, hair samples can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for analysis and confirmation. For screenings involving EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advisable. It's best to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, it’s specific to scalp hair. Meanwhile, body hair refers to other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in processing a laboratory drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing of samples into a laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial quick assessment for drug abuse. While screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be valid in legal situations. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in screening will need further verification through secondary confirmation.

For samples flagged as presumptive in the Screening phase, more hair is drawn from the original sample for the Extraction process. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to administer.

Positive screening results are confirmed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a smaller detection period.
  • Higher fidelity: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, boosting the reliability of results.
  • Tracks usage history: It outlines a timeline of drug use over an extended duration rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair samples.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests," these tests actually assess the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
