In Magnolia, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol evaluations, our centers are proficient across all US cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is needed. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or serve as customized testing solutions.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly utilized in drug assessments. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are favoring it over standard urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers commonly employ hair tests. The test's chief advantage lies in its long detection span of up to 90 days, using supervised collection, making it hard to alter. Yet, for recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into a potent method for revealing drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive record by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use over a period of up to around 90 days. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipment.

A sample sized 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to have a specimen weighing 150mg. Utilize a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In instances where scalp hair is unavailable, a corresponding amount of body hair is an acceptable substitute. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample’s seal and proper shipping are intact, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out any additional data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial fast assessment for substances of abuse. While it is economical in excluding drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen must receive confirmation to be court-admissible. For samples that exhibit presumptive positivity in Screening, secondary confirmation is mandatory.

If there is a presumptive positive outcome from the Screening phase, additional hair is harvested from the original specimen for preparation in Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn out from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, undergoes review per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug evaluations can reveal drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timespan.
  • Challenging to defraud: Hair drug tests are tough to manipulate, thus bolstering the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers temporal data: It illustrates a pattern of drug usage over an extended timeline, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur more cost than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Surpasses Urine Testing in Magnolia, NC becomes evident when comparing detection accuracy and reliability. Hair follicle tests offer enhanced accuracy through their ability to track substance use over a longer duration, unlike urine tests that may only represent recent drug exposure. This amplified scope ensures a deeper understanding of an individual's drug history.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Timeframe is a key feature in Magnolia, NC, where hair follicle testing provides a broader window for identifying drug use. Typically, it covers up to 90 days of substance history. Analyzing this timeline gives employers valuable insights into an individual’s past drug consumption, offering a comprehensive summary far beyond what standard tests show.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Security and Assurance with Tamper-Resistance in the Magnolia, NC testing community means reduced chances of sample manipulation. Hair follicle tests stand robust against adulteration, providing authentic and trustworthy outcomes. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
