Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Mamers, NC. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we provide facilities in every city across the country to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol, ETG, or accommodate other specific requirements.

Recently, the usage of hair follicle drug tests to screen for substances has become more widespread. Among employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals, hair tests are often preferred over the traditional urine tests. This method is favored by entities with strict no-drug policies, such as employers, judicial systems, and probation officers. The main advantage is its extended detection window, which can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug usage within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a detailed record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in its fiber structure during growth. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal up to roughly a 3-month use history for various substances. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transportation is effortless.

A 1.5-inch hair segment, equivalent to about 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or more than ten panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair could be collected. "Head hair" specifically indicates "scalp hair." In contrast, "body hair" encompasses all other hair categories such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result consists primarily of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage where samples are introduced into the lab's database. It includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data input that the electronic chain of custody might not cover.

Screening is an initial swift evaluation for abused substances. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug usage in most samples, any positive results must be confirmed for legal validity. Samples that return a presumptive positive in Screening require a secondary verification.

For samples presumed positive during Screening, further analysis involves extracting more hair from the original batch. During Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at concentrations lower than with other methods, such as urine or oral fluid—making hair drug testing the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation for any screening positives is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Reveals past patterns: Offers insights into drug consumption trends over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for detecting immediate use: Drugs typically become traceable in hair within 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug screening generally incurs higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests," the procedure examines the hair shaft, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The Superiority of Hair Follicle Testing in Mamers, NC

Hair testing triumphs over urine tests due to its unmatched detection window and accuracy. While urine tests capture recent drug use, hair tests reveal usage up to 90 days back, offering a comprehensive picture. This makes hair tests especially valuable for employers with strict drug policies seeking reliable detection.

Precision and Trustworthiness

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle tests provide an unparalleled level of dependability in detecting substance use. For employers focused on maintaining a drug-free environment, hair testing presents a superior detection method that ensures accuracy and minimizes the risk of cheating.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Period in Mamers, NC

Hair follicle drug testing excels with its ability to uncover drug usage over an extended period, up to 90 days. This expanded detection window offers employers a thorough insight into past drug consumption, aiding them to make informed hiring or monitoring decisions.

Data That Extends Beyond the Present

For organizations that prioritize awareness of long-term substance use, hair follicle testing provides valuable data beyond the limitations of shorter detection periods, giving a clearer view of an individual's history with substance use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Secure and Reliable Testing in Mamers, NC

Hair follicle tests are inherently tamper-resistant, significantly reducing the risk of sample manipulation seen in other testing methods. This feature ensures that the test results are authentic and dependable, critical for sectors requiring stringent testing protocols.

Dependable Results You Can Trust

With hair follicle testing, the likelihood of adulterated samples is minimized, providing unassailable proof of an individual's drug use history. This ensures the integrity of the testing process and the credibility of the outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
