Accredited Drug Testing offers all-inclusive hair follicle drug testing services in Manteo, North Carolina. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we at Accredited Drug Testing focus on hair analysis, with test centers available across all cities in the United States. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

Lately, utilizing hair follicle drug tests in drug screenings has become more prevalent. Employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over the standard urine tests. Such tests are preferred by employers with strict drug policies, judiciary systems, and probation services. One of the key advantages of a hair follicle test is its extensive drug detection window, usually reaching up to 90 days, during a supervised collection, making it hard to bypass. Yet, for tracing drug intake in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair presents a detection period extending to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and verifying. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We recommend weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening serves as an initial, swift check for substances of abuse. It is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in most cases, but a positive result in Screening requires verification for courtroom acceptance. All samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a secondary validation.

If Screening results indicate presumptive positivity, additional hair is sourced from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are obtained from hair at lower concentrations than those in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive findings from the screening phase is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples suspected positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to falsify: It's extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Adds historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug consumption, not just the recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not the under-scalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Manteo, NC, hair follicle testing is preferred for drug screening thanks to its advantages over traditional urine tests. It ensures higher detection accuracy, capturing a broader range of substances for a more reliable assessment, providing employers the assurance they need. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
