Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Marshallberg, North Carolina. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing and operates facilities across the country that can conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized requirements.

In recent times, more drug tests are using hair follicle methods. This shift is seen with many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts as they opt for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Businesses with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation mandates often prefer hair follicle tests. The key advantage is a longer detection timeline, spanning up to 90 days, under supervised conditions. It is also nearly impossible to tamper with. For detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the more precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting substance use. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers along the hair strands during growth. When sampled near the scalp, it can reveal a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy for transportation.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation tests. For tests including EtG, enhancements, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process mainly includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, samples are initially processed into the laboratory’s system, ensuring they are properly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not included in an electronic custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary drug abuse check. While it's cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Presumptively positive samples in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other substances like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing highly complex.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity undergo a washing process before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter time frame.
  • Challenging to deceive: The difficulty in tampering with a hair test leads to more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It provides a record of drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detection in hair requires about 5-7 days post-exposure.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strands, not on the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
