In Maxton, North Carolina, comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is offered by Accredited Drug Testing. If you require a drug or alcohol test that involves hair, our specialization in this area allows us to perform these tests across the nation. Normally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body, is necessary. Available tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, with various custom options.

Currently, hair follicle tests are becoming a more prevalent method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair drug testing over the traditional urine test. This type of test is ideal for organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies and probation requirements. The main advantage lies in its prolonged detection period, lasting up to 90 days, with collection that is difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the growing hair fibers. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (around the circumference of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplements, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it means scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of inputting a sample into the laboratory's system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial swift check for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive Screening result must be confirmed for court acceptance. Any samples that test presumpitvely positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, the drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive result are washed before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's exceedingly challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, ensuring the results are more reliable.
  • Historical data provision: Hair drug tests offer a record of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incetectable recent use: Detection of drugs in hair only becomes possible after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth.

Note: Although colloquially called "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Maxton, NC surpasses traditional urine tests by delivering notable advantages. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
